According to a 2018 study by Dr. Satchidananda Panda on time-restricted feeding, longevity has much to do with when you eat as opposed to what you eat. There are processes in the body that diet, exercise, calorie restriction, and intermittent fasting activates that make us healthier and live longer. This is where it gets even more interesting! Scientists have figured out a large part of the chemistry involved in the above, and are now using β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), a molecule, to mimic the processes. Production of DHEA peaks when people are in their 20s and 30s, and then it declines. This is the main reason that DHEA is considered an important chemical in the aging process, and a potential target for anti-aging drugs. DHEA can act as a neurosteroid, directly affecting targets inside the brain. Its activities are not fully understood, but some researchers believe it helps protect neurons from toxins and after injuries, such as strokes. Some research suggests that it may contribute to nerve growth, and that it may help reduce inflammation and prevent cell death. It may also modulate mood. For this reason, it has been studied for the treatment of mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Research published in the journal Nature in 2013 found that DHEA enhanced connections between the amygdala and hippocampus and reduced activity levels in both regions. is a compound created when you digest cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli or Brussels sprouts. DIM supplements are being studied for their protective effects against certain cancers. They’re also used to help prevent prostate enlargement, treat acne, aid weight loss, and reduce premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause symptoms. While these benefits are promising, overall research on DIM’s effectiveness and long-term safety in humans is limited. ANTI-CANCER properties. Test-tube and animal studies suggest that DIM supplements may help prevent the growth and spread of breast cancer cells. However, human studies are limited. A yearlong study gave 130 women with breast cancer on tamoxifen therapy either a placebo or 150 mg of DIM twice a day. DIM supplements resulted in a significantly improved ratio of two types of estrogen — 2-hydroxyestrone and 16-hydrozyestrone. Although research is ongoing, increasing the ratio of 2-hydrozyestrone to 16-hydrozyesterone may reduce breast cancer risk and cause anti-tumor effects . A 30-day study in 19 post-menopausal women with early-stage breast cancer found that taking 108 mg of DIM per day also resulted in beneficial changes in estrogen levels. Test-tube and animal studies indicate that DIM protects against ovarian, prostate, and colon cancers as well. All the same, human studies are needed. Notably, a mouse study found that DIM helped prevent cervical cancer. However, in a 6-month study in 551 women with cervical abnormalities, taking 150 mg of DIM per day had no effect on cervical cell changes. PROSTATE PROTECTION. DIM supplements may safeguard against prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. In fact, it may help combat prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), a condition that’s characterized by prostate cell growth and considered to be a precursor to prostate cancer. In a 12-month study, 21 men with high-grade PIN were given either a placebo or 900 mg of DIM per day. Those given DIM experienced significant improvements in prostate health, as well as PIN. Test-tube and animal studies likewise suggest that DIM helps fight prostate cancer. Still, more human research is necessary. WEIGHT LOSS. Given that estrogen plays an important role in regulating fat accumulation, DIM supplements may aid weight loss — although no human research currently supports this effect. All the same, studies link an imbalance of estrogen — either too much or too little — to an increased risk of weight gain in both men and women. Furthermore, DIM supplements may stimulate fat breakdown and inhibit fat cell formation. In one study in mice on a high fat diet, 23 mg of DIM per pound (50 mg per kg) of body weight significantly reduced the formation of new fat cells. DIM supplements are purported to aid other hormone-related conditions. Still, it’s important to remember that research is lacking on all of these effects. May fight acne. DIM supplements are sometimes used to treat hormonal acne. However, no research currently supports this use. May reduce hot flashes. Hot flashes during menopause likely result from hormonal changes. While DIM supplements are used to reduce hot flashes, their effectiveness isn’t supported by research. May relieve PMS symptoms. PMS symptoms are thought to be due to monthly changes in estrogen levels. Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is an important nutrient. In fact, every part of your body needs it to function properly. As a supplement, niacin may help lower cholesterol, ease arthritis and boost brain function, among other benefits. Niacin is one of the eight B vitamins, and it’s also called vitamin B3. There are two main chemical forms and each has different effects on your body. Both forms are found in foods as well as supplements. Nicotinic acid: As a supplement, nicotinic acid is a form of niacin used to reduce cholesterol levels and lower your risk of heart disease. Niacinamide or nicotinamide: Unlike nicotinic acid, niacinamide doesn’t lower cholesterol. However, it may help treat psoriasis and reduce your risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. Niacin is water-soluble, so your body doesn’t store it. This also means that your body can excrete excess amounts of the vitamin if it’s not needed. Your body gets niacin through food but also makes small amounts from the amino acid tryptophan. 1. Lowers LDL Cholesterol Niacin has been used since the 1950s to treat high cholesterol. In fact, it can lower levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol by 5–20%. However, niacin is not the primary treatment for high cholesterol due to its possible side effects. Rather, it’s primarily used as a cholesterol-lowering treatment for people who can’t tolerate statins. 2. Increases HDL Cholesterol In addition to lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol, niacin also raises “good” HDL cholesterol. Studies show that niacin raises HDL levels by 15–35%. 3. glutamine is one of 20 naturally occurring amino acids in dietary protein. In fact, L-glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the bloodstream and makes up 30–35 percent of the amino acid nitrogen in your blood. It’s actually known as a conditionally essential amino acid because your body uses it in large amounts. What does ‘conditionally essential amino acid’ mean? It refers to the amino acid becoming essential when the individual faces disease or specifically muscle wasting, which can happen in the course of certain diseases or even physical trauma. It also becomes a conditionally essential nutrient during certain catabolic states, including after bone marrow transplantation. Found in both animal and plant proteins, it’s also available in supplement form and is widely popular in the fitness community and beyond. It’s found in high levels in both casein and whey protein.
